Suspicious Minds

When I think of suspicious minds, I think of the Elvis song….” We’re caught in a trap, I can’t walk out, because I love you too much, baby…..” Then the chorus goes, “We can’t go on together, with suspicious minds, and we can’t build our dreams on suspicious minds…..” These days when I think of suspicious minds, I also think of what our society has become. I see that old snake, Satan, winding his way through us all, planting suspicion. Winding and weaving, dividing and changing, changing us from what God wants us to be, dimming our light. We always hear of greed, lust, envy, but what about suspicion and what it does to us. Satan uses our leaders, those in prominent positions, the 24-hour news cycle, the Internet to wind suspicion around us. Suspicion is wound around the people you pass in the store or on the street to whom you just say a word of hello. The Snake whispers, “Look away.” Suspicion is wound around the mother with the baby or young child that I smile at and speak kind words to. The Snake whispers, “Child molester.” Suspicion is wound around the woman who receives a compliment from a man. The Snake whispers, “Sexual Predator.” Suspicion is wound around the stranger you want to help or comfort, and it’s wound around us when someone on the street asks us for help. The Snake whispers, “Criminal or Swindler.” I see suspicion more often than ever in the faces of others and in their body language. I feel it creeping into my own mind.  See what is happening here? Suspicion is replacing love, compassion, kindness, a helping hand. It is replacing the reason we are here on this earth and we are allowing the Snake to do his will, to do what he does best….. divide and conquer. So maybe instead of having our eyes glued to that idiot box on our walls 24/7, or glued to the salacious words written in news stories, we need to glue ourselves to God, listening to Him through prayer and reading His written word. I refuse to allow Satan to turn me into someone without love and compassion for others. I refuse to allow Satan to drag me down into bitterness, anger, fear, and hate. I refuse to allow Satan to diminish my light. Let us take this away from what Elvis had to say in that song, we’re caught in a trap and we can’t go on this way or together, with these suspicious minds.

Love, M

  1. I’m with you, Montee! I refuse to fall in that trap of constantly being suspicious of everyone around me. I’m going to care and love and let the chips fall where they may. I’m glad I’m not alone.
